Trauma

What happens when you are traumatised?

Definition

Trauma is when a negative and highly disturbing chain of events, occur in a person’s life which results in highly charged negative emotions, cognitions and bodily sensations.

Origin

Memories of these disturbing events are stored implicitly and explicitly by the brain and the nerves system.

Effects

Depending on its level of disturbance, these memories and sensations can alter one’s belief system, personality, information processing and their nerves system.

Childhood

If these events occur during childhood, it most likely impacts the brain development, which may result in addiction, Mental Illnesses or interpersonal difficulties later in life.

How It Works?

EMDR changes the way that the brain processes past information and experiences.
Once an issue has been fully resolved, it is unlikely to re-emerge in the future.

Therapeutic Approaches

A therapeutic approach is the theory by which an allied mental health professional frames how they view human relationships and the issues that occur for people.

How Do I Know If EMDR Is Right For Me?

However, it is not appropriate for everyone.

For EMDR to be effective, you must recognize that you will have to be open to reliving some of those disturbing experiences in sessions, in order for the memory and its associated body sensations to be targeted for processing. As such, you must be willing to experience those strong feelings and disturbing thoughts and sensations for a short period of time during the session.

How Long Does Treatment Take?

EMDR Therapy has been called an ‘accelerated emotional processing method’ because it has been clinically proven to produce results within a shorter time than many other traditional therapeutic approaches.

Sessions are usually anything from 60 to 90 minutes. EMDR can be a brief focused treatment (around 10 to 16 sessions) or part of a longer psychotherapy treatment.

Will I Have Control Over My Body & Mind?

Yes!

EMDR utilises the natural healing ability of your body. As such, you will remain in control, fully alert and wide-awake during the course of treatment. This is not a form of hypnosis and you can stop the process at any time.

Throughout the session, the therapist will support and facilitate your own self-healing and intervenes as little as possible.

Reprocessing is usually experienced as something that happens spontaneously, and new connections and insights are felt to arise quite naturally from within.

As a result, most people experience EMDR as being a natural and very empowering therapy.
